is the botanical name for a type of vascular plant tissue that carries and distributes mineral nutrients from the root system of a plant upwards to its aerial parts

Xylem can have mechanical (support), transport (nutrient distribution) and storage functions in the plant. Nutrients move within the xylem by root buoyancy. The xylem serves to distribute water and dissolved minerals from the roots throughout the plant body. It does not need energy to function, everything happens on the basis of physical properties.
