The Lexicon of Beetles of the Czech Republic

mapa kfmeThis page contains additional thematic information to the Lexicon. Some of this information is intended primarily for beginning amateur entomologists. It contains a fairly comprehensive guide focusing on collecting, preparation and building an entomological collection.

Information relating to actual collecting includes descriptions and instructions for using various hunting methods suitable for collecting crawling, flying and aquatic beetles. In addition, the reader will gain an overview of the basic and specialized tools used for each type of hunting method. A special section is then devoted to the techniques and tools used, for example, in non-standard underground hunting, in vertebrate and invertebrate nests, in cave and abyssal collecting, in cadaveric collecting, and in vertebrate droppings.

The section on preparation introduces the reader to the detailed procedure used in the most common method of beetle preparation, as well as the peculiarities of preparation of the genus Meloe or, for example, the details of preparation of copulatory organs. The "Preparation Tools" sub-page then completes the overall overview of preparation techniques by introducing the different tools used in preparation methods.

The information dedicated to the beginning amateur entomologist is complemented by a section dealing with the creation and conservation of the collection. It contains, in addition to an overview of the tools used for collection creation, also data and suggestions useful for the determination and organization of the collection. A separate sub-page provides information on issues relating to the protection of the collection.

Faunistic grids are another thematic area covered by the Lexicon. In addition to maps with basic and detailed KFME grid divisions, you will find a theoretical introduction to the issue of faunistic UTM and KFME grids, as well as an online tool to support work with various map data.

A glossary of terms conveniently complements the thematic tools and can be used throughout the Lexicon. For this reason, you will find a glossary help block located on most pages in the right-hand column. In addition to the terms themselves, the glossary also contains the most commonly used Latin abbreviations.

The bioindicator groups are made up of several subpages and contain tabular lists of species useful in assessing specific habitats. There are lists for the bioindicator species of the families Carabidae,, Styphylinidae, Curculionidae and for the group of aquatic beetles. There are also descriptions explaining each bioindicator group.

Events is another group of information, listed under the Topics menu. It contains calendar details of upcoming events, divided into exchanges, exhibitions, conferences, excursions, lectures and other types. The Lexicon has an auxiliary block dedicated to events on most pages, which provides information about upcoming events.
