Limodromus assimilis (Paykull, 1790)Family: Carabidae

Size 8.8 - 12.1 mm. The body is all black with brown-black appendages. The base of the protonum is clearly edged. The protonum is narrowed in the posterior part. The edge of the protonum is curved, with sharp, almost rectangular corners. The elytra are shorter, slightly convex on the sides. The grooves on the elytra are deep. In the fifth intersegment it has 1 - 3 pits.

Adults can be seen from the first days of spring until the end of autumn. It is a common and widespread species of lowlands to mountains. It inhabits both moist and dry habitats with partial to complete shading, such as forests, parks, gardens or water banks. It is often found in common. Beetles are nocturnal, during the day they are hidden under the bark of a stump or old tree, in moss and old leaves, in rotting wood and under stones, in sheds under old damp rags, in houses, under bricks and the like.

The larva is just as predatory as the imago. It develops in June and July, and young beetles appear in the summer. They overwinter under old bark or in rotting wood.
