Introducing

Carabus (Limnocarabus) clathratus auraniensis (J.Müller, 1903)

Carabus (Limnocarabus) clathratus auraniensis (J.Müller, 1903)Family: Carabidae

Size 27 - 36 mm. The body is shiny black, except for the elytra, on which we find pits with a copper to brass color. Rarely, the entire surface of the body can have a copper or metallic green shimmer. Very rarely, the legs and antennae can be partly red. The elytra are oval with pits and protruding ribs. A clear cut is visible at the end of the elytra. It is capable of flight.

In our country, it is a very rare species, inhabiting mainly lowlands or low-lying valleys. Adults are found from March (during the first spring floods) to August, only and usually near standing water, in damp and swampy to peaty places, but also in floodplain forests. Sometimes also in ditches or on muddy banks.

It is active during the day and on hot sunny days it runs around aquatic plants. When hunting prey, it often descends below the water surface, taking an air bubble under its gills, similar to water beetles. It is a relatively good swimmer and can stay underwater for several minutes. However, it mainly feeds on small carrion (mollusks, earthworms, etc.).
