Calathus (Neocalathus) melanocephalus melanocephalus (Linaeus, 1758)Family: Carabidae

Size 6 - 8.2 mm. Protonum, base of elytra and epipleura are red, elytra themselves are black to black-brown. Alternatively, protonum can be brown-red, as well as antennae (except 1st segment) and pulps.

Adults from March to October. It is a common species of field and meadow habitats. It occurs mainly in unshaded and semi-shaded habitats, such as meadows, dry and moist forests, heaths, pastures, fields and steppes. It can be found from lowlands to mountain heights of around 2,000 m above sea level. It can be macropterous and brachypterous.

It hides under stones, in dry leaves, under bark and in moss. It also sits on grasses and occasionally in flowers. It hunts small animals, but also eats forest mushrooms. It is active mainly at night. The larvae are also predatory. Mating takes place in the fall, the larvae overwinter and the beetles hatch in the summer of the following year. Sometimes the adults also overwinter.
