Brachinus (Brachinus) crepitans (Linaeus, 1758)

Brachinus (Brachinus) crepitans (Linaeus, 1758)Family: Carabidae

Size 6.5 - 10 mm. Elytra are blue, green or blackish-blue and finely grooved. Head, pronotum, scutellum, antennae and legs are yellow-red. The third and fourth segments of the antennae and sometimes certain segments of the legs are darkly colored. On closer inspection, fine hairs on the body surface can be seen.

Adults stay mainly under stones from late March to late September, often in larger numbers. Adults are capable of flight and are nocturnal predators. Adults live in dry heaths, dry meadows, fields and vineyards with calcareous soil. They occur mainly in warm higher altitudes, but also in lower-lying areas. Preferred habitats usually have low vegetation with areas without vegetation, therefore they are often found in areas used for vineyards and agriculture, on quarry heaps or in ruderal areas. They can also be found in sunny grassy habitats such as poor pastures.

The larvae are also predatory, developing as ectoparasites on the pupae of other ground beetles.

From the Life of Insects

  • Some fireflies can even kill a small frog, says an expert. Why do they glow at all? They are being studied in Olomouc.

Fireflies, known from Jan Karafiát's stories about Broučci, are not only cute glowing creatures, but also fascinating predatory beetles. This year, they were declared Insect of the Year by the Czech Entomological Society.
"Firefly larvae are predatory. They feed on snails or earthworms, and some can even kill small frogs in South America," says Dominik Kusý from the Biodiversity and Molecular Evolution research group at the CATRIN scientific center in Olomouc.
